In General
The Playtronica Biotron is an experimental musical interface developed by the creative studio Playtronica and released in the beginning of 2025. Conceived as an interactive MIDI controller, the device allows users to transform plants into playable musical interfaces by using their conductive properties. The instrument was first designed for educational workshops, artistic installations and experimental sound practices, reflecting the company's broader interest in embodied interaction and participatory music-making.
Details
Technically, the Biotron functions as a USB MIDI controller that detects electrical conductivity between connected objects and converts these signals into MIDI note data. The board provides two connection points and three touch sensors for changing cc parameters or muting the Biotron. Once connected to a plant, the Biotron calibrates for a few seconds before being able to convert the signal into a MIDI signal and send it to a host device such as a computer, tablet or smartphone. The system responds with virtually no noticeable latency and allows the intensity and surface of the touch to influence the generated signal.
