The instrument
The Yamaha CX-5M from 1984 is a computer compatible with the MSX system that adds an eight-voice FM synthesiser module to its functions. It has stereo audio outputs, an input for a four-octave keyboard and a pair of MIDI input/output connectors. This CX-5M includes the SFG-05 FM module, which was actually first introduced with the CX-FMII. It supports a MIDI input, allowing the internal FM synthesiser to be played from any external MIDI keyboard. The assigned keyboard is a Yamaha YK-01.
Details
The CX-5M was built for the MSX standard, which included slots for programmed cassettes. These cartridges expanded the functionality of the unit and provided access to a range of games, office applications, etc. Yamaha produced a number of cartridges for the system, including a programmer for the DX range of FM keyboards and a real-time sequencer. The Voice Editor and Music Composer allow a bank of 48 sounds to be programmed for the CX-5M's synthesiser and up to eight channels of music to be sequenced. The Yamaha SFG-05 FM synthesiser unit features an 8-channel 4 op FM sound chip used for multi-timbral sounds and CSM vocals.
