Roland D-70 Digital Super LA Synthesizer

The instrument

The D-70 is a 6-fold multi-timbral, digital MIDI synthesiser with 76 velocity-sensitive synthesiser keys and channel aftertouch. Like all synthesisers in the D series, it is based on LA synthesis for sound generation, is a further development of the U and D series with a maximum of 30 voices and combines up to 4 tones with PCM oscillators and dynamic filters. Originally it was to be called the U-50, because the sound generation is also based on the U-series, while the dynamic filters come from the D-series. However, it is not compatible with the D-50.

Details

The keyboard of the D-70 can supply 4 zones with layer and split sounds, whereby the send channel is switched on and set separately for each zone. The multi-timbrality with a maximum of 30 voices is rarely used, as with 2 tones per sound there are still 15 voices, with 3 tones 10 voices and with 4 tones 7 voices. A total of 114 multisamples are available, with one envelope each for oscillator, filter and volume with five rates and five levels for programming. The LFOs have the waveforms square, triangle, sawtooth and ramp (random). There are six reverbs (Room 1-3, Hall 1 & 2 and Gated), delay and cross-delay as well as an effect consisting of chorus 1 & 2, FB chorus, flanger and short delay, plus the reverb/delay parameters reverb/delay time and level as well as delay feedback. The level, delay, rate, depth and feedback can be set for chorus/flanger.
