Playtronica Orbita Midi Color Sequencer

First released in fall 2025, the Playtronica Orbita is a tactile MIDI sequencer developed by the creative studio Playtronica as part of its series of experimental musical interfaces. Unlike conventional step sequencers that rely on screens and grid-based software interfaces, Orbita translates sequencing into a physical and visual process, using a rotating circular platform on which users place colored magnetic markers representing musical notes or events. As the disc rotates, these magnets pass a sensor and trigger musical signals, allowing melodies and rhythmic patterns to be built through direct physical manipulation. The device was designed to make electronic composition more intuitive and playful, encouraging exploration through touch and movement rather than programming. Intended for musicians, educators and interactive installations, Orbita reflects Playtronica’s broader approach to instrument design, emphasizing tactile interaction, accessibility and the transformation of musical sequencing into a tangible experience.

Technically, Orbita functions as a rotating MIDI sequencer that sends MIDI data to external devices such as computers, tablets, software synthesizers or hardware instruments. The system includes a circular turntable with four concentric tracks, enabling up to four independent melodic or rhythmic loops to run simultaneously. Colored magnets placed on the rotating surface correspond to specific pitches or control messages. Tempo is controlled by a rotary speed knob, and individual tracks can be muted via dedicated buttons. The device communicates with external equipment via USB-C MIDI and a 3.5 mm MIDI output, allowing integration with digital audio workstations and hardware synthesizers. Additional parameters such as note length, velocity and probability can be assigned to tracks, and color detection can also generate MIDI control-change (CC) messages for manipulating synthesis parameters instead of triggering notes.
