JMS Jellinghaus C-Mix Fader Automation System

The instrument

The German software company Jellinghaus launched the C-Mix Automation System for Atari ST in 1987. Until then, it had mainly written patch editors for the Commodore 64. The C-Mix features hardware with MIDI-controllable VCAs that can be integrated into the signal path of a mixing console. The VCAs are controlled directly via the mixer's faders. A program can be used to record and play back the MIDI information generated by the faders to control the VCAs. It can create groups of faders even if the mixer does not support this feature.

Details

The C-Mix offers automated control and simulates a 16-channel mixing console, with fader levels displayed on the screen during music playback. The hardware is supplied in banks of 16 VCAs in a metal case and is expandable to up to 64 channels. The software allows subgroups to be formed and channels to be muted during a mix. The generated mix data can be stored on a floppy disk in the host computer (Atari 1040 ST). With an external sync box, the software can be synchronised to the SMPTE code from the tape via MIDI Song Position Pointer.
