The instrument
6 years after the legendary Stage Echo RE-201, Roland introduced the Chorus Echo RE-501 in 1980. It featured a noise cancellation circuit, a second mono input and an additional mono output, a pair of balanced XLR connectors with line level, delay, reverb and chorus. There was also a rackmount version, the SRE-555.
Details
The balanced XLR input connection (+4 dBm, 600 Ohm) and the balanced XLR output connection (+4 dBm, 600 Ohm) transmit a mix of the direct input signal and the processed output signals. Line level signals connect the RE-501 to an external mixing console or other audio equipment. The unbalanced 1/4″ input jack with input level selector includes settings from -50 dBm for microphones, -25 dBm for guitars and zero dBm for connecting a synthesiser or mixer.
The Echo Mode selector has six effect settings, 1-3 for single delay, 4-6 for multiple delay. Echo / Sound On Sound can adjust the output level of the effect signal. Repeat Echo activates Intensity for the number of echoes and Repeat Rate for the delay time, Reverb Volume adjusts the level of the spring reverb, Bass and Treble change the sound of the echo repetition.
