In General

The Playtronica TouchMe is an experimental electronic musical interface developed by the creative studio Playtronica and released around 2018. Conceived as an interactive MIDI controller, it transforms physical contact between people, objects or materials into MIDI signal by using the conductive properties of the human body and other materials, such as fruits, plants or water. The instrument was designed not only for musical performance but also for educational workshops, artistic installations and experimental sound practices, reflecting the company's broader interest in embodied interaction and participatory music-making.

Details

Technically, the TouchMe functions as a USB MIDI controller that measures electrical conductivity and resistance between two contact surfaces. When a circuit is closed – typically by two people touching each other while holding the device or by connecting conductive objects through alligator clips – the system detects variations in electrical resistance caused by the area and intensity of the contact. These variations are converted into MIDI note data and transmitted to a computer, tablet or synthesizer.
